Lillies aka Lilium spp.
DEADLY FOR CATS AND TOXIC FOR DOGS

By far the most dangerous flower on this list for cats. Lilies are extremely common in Dubai bouquets and arrangements they are long-lasting, fragrant, and widely stocked by florists across the city. Every single part of the plant is toxic to cats: petals, leaves, pollen, stems, and even the water in the vase. A cat does not need to eat the flower - brushing against an open bloom and then grooming pollen off its fur is enough to cause acute kidney failure and death!
For dogs, lilies can cause vomiting, lethargy, and diarrhoea but are not as immediately life-threatening as they are for cats.

SYMPTOMS IN CATS:
Vomiting Lethargy Loss of appetite Kidney failure
Death if untreated

Tulip
TOXIC FOR CATS AND DOGS

Tulips are a staple of Dubai flower shops and arrive in large shipments from Holland and Kenya. They contain alkaloids and glycosides throughout the plant, with the highest concentration in the bulb. Dubai residents who receive tulips in bouquets and then re-plant the bulbs in pots are placing both their dogs (who dig) and cats (who chew) at significant risk. The whole plant is considered toxic, though ingestion of cut stems and petals still causes alarming symptoms in both dogs and cats.

SYMPTOMS

Drooling Mouth irritation Vomiting Diarrhoea Dizziness Laboured breathing

Hyacinth
TOXIC FOR CATS AND DOGS

Hyacinths are a popular filler flower in Dubai spring bouquets thanks to their strong fragrance and beautiful dense blooms. They are closely related to tulips and carry similar toxicity alkaloids and lactones concentrated in the bulb but present throughout. Dubai florists often use hyacinths in mixed arrangements, meaning pet owners may not even realise one is present. Dogs are particularly at risk because of their tendency to chew and investigate new smells.

SYMPTOMS

Excessive drooling Vomiting Diarrhoea Increased heart rate Difficulty breathing

Chrysanthemum
TOXIC FOR CATS AND DOGS
Chrysanthemums are one of the most common flowers at Dubai florists and supermarket flower stands. They are inexpensive, colourful, and widely used as filler in mixed bouquets. All parts contain pyrethrins and sesquiterpene lactones, compounds that are particularly irritating to the skin and digestive system of cats and dogs. Cats seem more sensitive than dogs. The sap can also cause contact dermatitis if it gets on skin or paws.

SYMPTOMS

Drooling Vomiting Diarrhoea Loss of coordination Skin irritation

Daffodil / Narcissus
TOXIC FOR CATS AND DOGS

Daffodils and narcissus are frequently used in Dubai bouquets and potted displays, especially around gift occasions. They contain lycorine and other alkaloids throughout the entire plant and the vase water becomes toxic as cut stems leach their sap. This means even a curious dog or cat drinking from the vase is at risk. The bulbs are especially dangerous and can cause severe cardiovascular and neurological effects.

SYMPTOMS
Severe vomiting Diarrhoea Tremors Low blood pressureCardiac arrhythmia
